Leopard
geckos are one of the most popular pet lizards in captivity and have been kept
as pets since the mid 1900’s with their earliest recorded breeding in a
terrarium being at the start of the 1960’s. Their popularity is due to their
compact size, relative ease of care, and their easy going nature that means
they are tolerant of handling. Their popularity exploded into the mainstream
during the late 1990’s and early 2000s with the discovery of the range of
different colour morphs that are now available. This started off with albinos
and individuals that were being line bred to reduce the number of spots has now
led to a whole myriad of different colour and pattern combinations.
