Pink Tongue Skinks, Cyclodomorphus
gerrardii are a slender cousin of the better known Blue Tongue Skink.
They are native to eastern Australia from Northern Queesnsland to New South
Wales. They inhabit wet coastal woodlands; sclerophyll forest and coastal
rainforest and their activity pattern is directed by seasonal changes. During
the hotter months they primarily become active at night but in cooler months
they are active during the day as well. This change in behaviour is most likely
due to their dietary preferences, they will feed on a wide variety of
invertebrates, but they prefer to eat slugs and snails which are themselves
more active in cooler weather or at night.
When not actively foraging for
food they will spend their time resting in amongst leaf litter, under logs or
in tree hollows. When moving around on the floor they take the same approach as
blue tongued skinks and move mostly by undulating and almost “swimming” through
the leaf litter but unlike Blue Tongue Skinks, Pink Tongue Skinks will take to
climbing trees as well in search for a meal. This is facilitated by being a
slenderer build with longer limbs and a semi prehensile tail, all traits which
aid them in climbing. Younger individuals are more arboreal than the adults and
spend most of their time off the floor, this may well also help them to avoid
predation.
Pink Tongue Skinks make an
interesting and laid back pet, suitable for beginners and more advanced keepers
alike. They are personable and are very tolerant of handling. They prefer a
diet of live snails but will also eat specialist diets like arcadia Omnigold
and Bluey Buffet.
