Smooth Knobtailed geckos (Nephrurus levis) sometimes also called the three lined Knobtailed Gecko are one of the smaller smooth knob tailed gecko species native to the central arid areas of Australia. There are three recognised subspecies these are the nominate form Nephrurus levis levis, there is also N.levis pilbarensis and N.levis occidentalis.

Similar in care to all the other Knobtails they are a docile and hardy species that are popular with beginners and enthusiasts alike. In their native Australia they are often the first pet gecko that enthusiasts will keep. They occur over a wide variety of arid and semi arid environments but will normally spend the daytime down burrows that they dig themselves only venturing out at dusk to hunt. They will actively dig burrows so by keeping the substrate slightly damp and at least 3-4 inches deep this will allow them to dig their own burrows in captivity. They are an insectivorous species that in the wild would eat insects, spiders, centipedes and even smaller lizards. In captivity they will thrive on a mixed diet of small insects.

They have a good level of tolerance to cool temperatures at night meaning they will remain active at lower temperatures than many other gecko species but if the temperatures drop too low, they will stay in their burrows to avoid the cold.

They would have a considerable variation of seasons in the wild and especially if intending to breed this species they require a winter cooling period to mark the changes in seasonal temperatures.
