Bynoe's gecko (Heteronotia
binoei) is widely distributed across various habitats across Australia.
They prefer rocky arid environments but have also been found in forested
environments and within urban areas and human habitation. They are a very
adaptable species able to live in a wide variety of different microhabitats. In
the wild they are normally active from dusk and through the night where they
would hunt small insect prey. They are almost exclusively terrestrial (live on
the ground) and have poorly developed lamellae (Sticky toe pads) so they are
unable to climb smooth surfaces like glass.
They are very interesting as they
reproduce by parthenogenesis (asexual cloning) a very rare method of
reproduction in vertebrates. In reptiles it tends to be best known in another
gecko species, the Mourning gecko, from the south pacific islands. Being parthenogenic
the whole population is female, and each female can lay eggs without the
presence of a male. In the wild males have been recorded but the captive
population is entirely female and parthenogenic. Some literature incorrectly
states that they only lay eggs once per year, this is entirely wrong. Our
Bynoe's geckos are all bred right here in store, and we can confirm that each
female will lay multiple clutches of eggs each summer season (normally between
April and October).
In captivity they are a communal species that thrive when kept in small groups, if the adults are kept well fed, they show little interest in smaller individuals/babies so you can allow the eggs to hatch in situ in the adults enclosure. They are a small species that only grows to a maximum of 12cm. They prefer an arid rocky habitat but will appreciate a light misting just as the lights go out in the evening and will often drink water droplets off of cage furnishings rather than out of a water bowl. Bynoe's Geckos are an excellent option for someone looking for an unusual species of gecko that is easy to look after and very seldom kept.
