This species of gecko originates from the Bawangling nature
reserve on the Island of Hainan, an offshore province of China. They are very
rare in the hobby but are relatively easy to care for. Although called cave
geckos, most cave geckos tend to live on the forest floor in dense forested
environments, often associated with rocky escarpments within the forest where
they would live in amongst the rock crevices during the day, only venturing out
after dark to hunt. Relatively closely related to the popular and well known
leopard geckos they share some superficial similarities visually. This is the
reason why this species also goes by the common name of “The Bawangling Leopard
Gecko”.
They don’t grow as large and are less chunky in overall body shape
than the common leopard gecko. Their habitat preferences are also considerably
different to that of a leopard gecko as cave geckos need low temperatures, maximum
of 25C during the day and cooler at night. They also need a very humid environment
to mimic the dense forest floor where they naturally occur. They will thrive in
a live planted / bioactive enclosure.
They can be a little shy during the day but are easy to handle being
naturally placid in temperament.
Like most of the animals we sell, these Bawangling cave geckos are
bred right here in store.
