Yellow Ackies (Varanus acanthurus.), also known as a ridge tailed monitor, are one of the smallest and most personable of all monitor lizard species. They are undoubtedly one of (if not the) most popular pet monitor lizard. They are native to northwest Australia where they can often be found sheltering in amongst rocks or hunting in amongst low shrubs in dry woodland. They can potentially grow to a length of approximately 2 feet, but many adults are slightly smaller than this. They can climb well but are generally terrestrial by nature. Many people refer to them as being like a Komodo dragon but in a smaller package. They require relatively high temperatures and a good amount of space as they are very active during the day. They will also appreciate semi regular misting as if kept under very dry conditions all the time they can develop shedding issues. Primarily they feed on insects such as crickets, locusts and dubia cockroaches but occasional rodents can be fed as a treat. They can be gluttonous with food so do be mindful not to overfeed them as they are prone to obesity in captivity. With a little extra dedication, they are a great choice as an alternative to bearded dragons or blue tongue skinks for a novice keeper but due to their personality they are equally popular with intermediate and advanced keepers. There are two subspecies of Ackie monitor “Red Ackies” and “Yellow Ackies” the names can be a bit misleading though as both are a reddish brown in colouration. The markings do differ between the subspecies but genuine red Ackies tend to be much rarer and command a much higher price.

Youngsters can be a bit skittish, but they tame down really easily and they will tolerate regular handling or being let out of their enclosure to roam around and investigate within the home.
