Gargoyle Geckos originate from the South Pacific Island of New Caledonia where the climate year round is like British summertime. They are a very close relative of the ever popular Crested Gecko, and the care is virtually identical. The only major point of note is that Gargoyle Geckos should only ever be reared on their own as they can be very cannibalistic towards siblings if you try and cohabit them before adulthood. Gargoyle geckos get their name from the two small bony protrusions on the top of the head which give them an appearance reminiscent of a gothic gargoyle statue.

Their care requirements are relatively straightforward and due to the ease of breeding them they have now been selectively bred for a wide range of colours. They have two main pattern forms, striped where they have between 2 and 5 stripes down their back running head to tail or reticulated where their whole body is covered with intricate markings made up of fine irregular lines. Although the standard colour for them is grey and black they have also been selectively bred to have cream, orange or red markings which are in combination with the pattern markings giving rise to morphs such as “red Striped” or “orange blotch reticulated” for example. They are a calm and laid back species of gecko that responds well to handling making them an ideal choice for first time reptile keepers.
