Viper Geckos (Hemidactylus imbricatus) formerly classified as (Teratolepis fasciatus) are a small species of gecko native to southern Pakistan and into Southwestern Iran. They get the name viper gecko from their enlarged plate like scalation that covers their tails which is reminiscent to the scales of some vipers.

They are a small and sociable species that inhabit rocky arid environments and store fat in their enlarged tails to help them survive through less favourable conditions in winter. They are sometimes called carrot tailed viper geckos due to their disproportionately fat tails.

They are purely insectivorous by nature and we have found that they are capable of overpowering and consuming larger prey than may be expected for a gecko of their size. During the winter lean months there would be less food availability, and should you be attempting to stimulate them to breed in a terrarium then a winter cooling period is advisable.

They can be housed in small groups of one male and multiple females or even in bachelor groups of males. When there are no females present the males will live together without issue but if there are multiple males and females in the enclosure make sure it is larger and has ample room for the males to have separate territories and more females than males present in the group to avoid bickering.

They require a semi-arid environment but will appreciate occasional misting as they will often lick water droplets off of the cage furnishings which should be comprised of plenty of hiding rocks and logs. They spend most of their time on the floor of the enclosure but will make use of rough textured branches to climb on especially when they are more active at nighttime. They do not tend to use a humid hide like many other arid geckos, but it is advisable to provide them with at least one small cave or and area of their enclosure that is kept slightly moist. This species will lick calcium directly out of a bowl (especially egg laying females) so it is advisable to provide a dish of calcium powder in their enclosure along with dusting their prey insects with it.

Like virtually all the animals we sell, these were bred right here in store, so you get all the benefits of buying direct from the breeder as well as from a renowned 5 Star licensed pet shop. What more could you want…
