Vietnamese mossy frogs are one of the most iconic and sought after frog species in captivity. Initially discovered in 1903 it wasn’t until relatively recently that they became available within the pet trade. They were initially discovered inhabiting steam banks in the mountainous limestone outcroppings of northern Vietnam, Laos and Southern China. Their natural habitat is primarily evergreen forest between 500-1500m elevation. They have since been found living and breeding in tree hollows and even caves as well the stream banks in which they were initially found. They prefer cooler temperatures and a semi-aquatic habitat.  While they will thrive in a naturalistic live planted terrarium, a Paludarium would be the gold standard for care whereby they have an aquatic base to the environment with branches and plants emerging from it. This species only requires minimal heating and will stress if the temperatures get too high. They are a medium sized tree frog with females growing slightly larger than males up to around 9-10cm. Purely insectivorous in terms of nutritional needs they will thrive on a diet of small crickets and locusts in captivity. Due to their sensitivity to high temperatures they are  perhaps a species better suited to intermediate keepers rather than beginners, either way they make a unique and rewarding species to keep.
