The Bumblebee Poison dart frog (Dendrobates leucomelas) are native to South America including Brazil, Columbia, Guyana and specifically Venezuela. One of the most popular of all dart frogs and often a species that people will start with. They are generally a bold and sociable species which are frequently kept in small groups.  Due to their larger size and comparative hardiness they are often regarded as being a great beginner dart frog species.

Although many of the other popular beginner dart frogs fall into the Dendrobates tinctorius group which all have an ultrasonic call (not able to be heard by humans), bumblebee dart frogs do have an audible call that sounds like a gentle birdsong.

Like all Dart frogs, the toxins that they have in the wild are accumulated from their diet so captive bred individuals do not contain the same toxins and are therefore harmless. They are still however a hands off pet that is not for touching but this is more due to the delicate nature of these frogs rather than any toxins.

Poison dart frogs make superb occupants for live planted “Naturalistic” and “bioactive” enclosures as you can create a little slice of rainforest for these to hop around in and due to their small size they wont destroy the environment crashing around all over it like some larger amphibian species would.

Keeping dart frogs can be thought of as being like keeping tropical fish, it takes a considerable amount of time and resources to craft the ideal living environment for them but once the environment is in place they are one of the easiest and lowest maintenance reptiles or amphibians possible to keep.
