Bumblebee dart frogs (Dendrobates leucomelas) are native to the rainforests of Northern South America, predominantly Venezuela where they are often found close to water sources. Dart Frogs gain their toxins from their diet and are therefore non-toxic in captivity. This species is one of the most sought after in the hobby, being both bright and incredibly bold by nature. They are one of the hardiest species to maintain in captivity and so are probably the most suitable for a first time Dart Frog keeper. They make a fantastic display species due to their boldness and relatively communal nature. Many of the commonly kept “beginner” dart frogs have an ultrasonic call which cannot be heard by people, Bumblebee Dart frogs however do have an audible call which sounds like bird song.

Dart frogs are immensely popular as living display exhibits in the home, its like having a miniature slice of the rainforest in an enclosure. Dart Frogs only really thrive in bioactive live planted set ups so we would always recommend that this is how they are kept.
