Ranitomeya imitator is a small species of poison dart originating from the rainforests of Peru. They are an active arboreal species that exist in various different morphs/phases. Each of these morphs mimics the pattern and colour of another dart frog from that particular region. Some of these morphs are of conservation concern simply due to their tiny range sizes. For example, a certain ‘intermedius’ morph in the Huallaga canyon may only have a range size of a few square kilometers, most of which has been or will soon be converted to cattle pastures, banana fields, or coffee farms. A few of the morphs include, but are not limited to, striped, spotted, Varadero, and banded. The striped morph is the most widely spread, mimicking the striped Ranitomeya variabilis and can be found throughout the lower Huallaga River drainage in Peru. The spotted morph mimics the highland spotted frog Ranitomeya variabilis with mainly blue-green coloration, but can be found in other forms, sometimes in yellow for example, those living near the city of Tarapoto.. The varadero morph is a lowland form that lives nearby another but does not resemble it. Last, the banded morph, a mimic of Ranitomeya summersi, lives in much drier climates than the average R. imitator and is most often found in Dieffenbachia and Heliconia plants.
