Tiger Legged Monkey Frogs (Phyllomedusa hypochondrialis) are a small species of treefrog native to South America from Brazil to as far north as Venezuela & Columbia. Reclassified in 2017 under a taxonomic swap they are now technically Pithecopus hypochondiralis but most people still refer to them as a Phyllomedusa species.

They are normally found at lowland elevations in a wide variety of habitats from pastureland and dry/semi-dry woodland to subtropical forests and wetland marshes showing a high level of adaptability to different environments and ability to live in secondary or degraded habitats. They are generally a shrub species found relatively low to the ground rather than treetops. Like all Monkey Frogs they move around by climbing rather than hopping and use slow methodical movements to navigate through thin twigs and leaves.

Nocturnal by nature and feeding on a purely insectivorous diet they are a popular terrarium species due to their behavioural traits and stunning colouration (those tiger stripes are amazing). There is considerable sexual dimorphism between males and the larger females meaning sexing them as adults is relatively straightforward.

Like all South American Treefrogs they are a display only species that will thrive in a bioactive enclosure but will not tolerate repeated human interaction. The popularity of monkey frogs means they are always in high demand we can only hope more people will be successful in breeding them to keep up with the demand.
