Robert Mertens's day gecko (Phelsuma
robertmertensi) is diurnal species of lizard in
the family Gekkonidae. They are named after the German Herpetologist
Robert Mertens. The species is endemic to the Comros, and in the
wild are often found on banana trees or in abandoned vanilla orchid
plantations. They need high humidity and a well planted enclosure in order to
thrive. They feed on small insects and sometimes lick sweet fruits, pollen
& nectar.
These lizards are one of the smallest of its genus, P.
robertmertensi can reach a total length (including tail) of about 11
centimetres (4.3 in).
They are a striking colour, with the main body being blue or
green with flecks, an orange dorsal and the flanks being orange or brown.
These lizards are small & fast, therefore are not suitable for handling.
