Red Eyed Crocodile Skinks are an interesting small skink species that are highly sought after due to their incredibly striking appearance (they look like baby dragons).  In nature they are found in the tropical rainforests of New Guinea where they live on the forest floor feeding on small insects and worms. Unlike most other skinks these animals can make a sound when stressed like the chirping noise made by geckos. They require relatively cool temperatures and high humidity. They do very well in a live planted enclosure with a UV light and regular spraying.

They are slow to reproduce as the females only lay a single egg at a time, but can lay multiple times throughout the year. Both parents will exhibit guarding behaviour over their eggs and young. This remarkable level of parental protection is not something often encountered in the reptile kingdom. Both males and females can be territorial towards one another, so they are best kept in pairs or family groups comprising a pair and their offspring.

Whilst they can be occasionally handled they are not a species that will appreciate continuous keeper interaction, preferring to be a visual pet rather than a hands on one. The characteristic red ring around they eye is absent in babies but will develop as the animals age. 

These animals are often available wild caught but our animals are captive bred right here in store.
