The mourning gecko is found widely distributed across islands in the South Pacific. They are excellent at colonizing new areas as they reproduce by parthenogenesis (asexual cloning) a very rare method of reproduction in vertebrates. The entire population is female and once mature they will lay eggs of which around 75-90% of which contain a viable embryo which will hatch after 60-80 days. It is thought that they originated in the Arno Atoll (Part of the Marshall Islands) but because they are so widespread now their origins are still debated. They have been introduced or colonised virtually every island in the Southern Pacific as well as introduced populations in Southern Asia, Florida, Hawaii and many other areas globally. In captivity they are a communal species that thrive when kept in small groups, where they will interact to establish a social hierarchy. We normally suggest that people start with at least 2 just so that they can start their own colony. They are a very hardy species and have been recorded living and reproducing at temperatures between 19-33C although the optimum for them is around 25-27C. In the wild they eat insects, fruit and nectar from flowers, in captivity as well as eating all of these things they will relish any of the artificial diets designed for crested geckos/day geckos and they will also take honey. Whilst in general we never advocate mixed species enclosures, it has been a popular practice amongst dart frog keepers to cohabit with Mourning geckos as the geckos will eat any insects that get too large for the frogs.
