Leopard geckos are one of the most popular pet lizards in captivity and have been kept as pets since the mid 1900’s with their earliest recorded breeding in a terrarium being at the start of the 1960’s. Their popularity is due to their compact size, relative ease of care, and their easy going nature that means they are tolerant of handling. Their popularity exploded into the mainstream during the late 1990’s and early 2000s with the discovery of the range of different colour morphs that are now available. This started off with albinos and individuals that were being line bred to reduce the number of spots has now led to a whole myriad of different colour and pattern combinations.

In the last 10-15 years there has been much interest in the different species of leopard gecko, Normal Leopard geckos are Eublepharis macularius native predominantly to Afghanistan and Pakistan but there are a number of other species too. These Include Eublepharis hardwickii (the Indian Leopard gecko) and Eublepharis angramainyu (The Iranian Giant Leopard gecko).

Iranian Giant Leopard Geckos are the largest Eublepharid gecko, as the name would suggest they come from Iran but are also found in Iraq and some parts of Syria and Turkey. They vary in size across their range with individuals from the Ilam province in Iran being the largest of all. The Iranian Leopard geckos we have here are from bloodlines collected in the Ilam Province but many generations captive bred.

Again, as the name would suggest these really are “giant” when compared to the normal Leopard Geckos. Average weight for an adult male normal Leopard Gecko is around 90-100g while adult males of the Iranian Giant leopard geckos can reach around double that and have been known to exceed 180g.

Their temperament and care is exactly the same as for standard leopard geckos but obviously due to their larger size we would never suggest housing one in anything smaller than a 3ft (90cm) enclosure, a 4ft (120cm) would be better.
