Milk snakes are highly variable relatives to the king snakes. Milk snakes originate from central and northern America where they can be found in a variety of habitats. In captivity they are a great alternative to a corn snake as a beginner species. A little skittish when young they are prone to musk rather than bite when threatened.
The Milk Snakes were previously all classified as different subspecies of Lampropeltis triangulum, however they have now been reclassified.
A good beginner snake species with stunning colours. Honduran Milk Snakes make great pets and are a beautiful species, orange and black bands give them a very striking look. The coloured bands are an attempt to mimic the venomous Coral Snakes, however the order of the coloured bands differ between the two groups of animals. This is an example of Batesian mimicry, where a harmless species mimics a dangerous one in order to deter predators. As its name suggests the Honduran Milk Snake is native to Honduras, but also Nicaragua and Northern parts of Costa Rica.
