Golden Tailed Geckos (Strophurus taenicauda) are a small species native to Queensland in Northeastern Australia. They are a member of the “Strophurus” family of geckos which are commonly called spiny tiled geckos, but this particular species doesn’t actually have any spines on its tail. All species of “Strophurus” can squirt a sticky glue like substance from glands in their tail as a defence mechanism to deter predators but this is very rare in captivity, we have never actually seen this particular species do it.

There are three slightly different subspecies that differ by markings and eye colour, these subspecies occur in slightly different regions in the wild. We breed two different subspecies of Golden Tailed Gecko the White eyed form (Strophurus taenicauda albiocularis) and the nominate form with red eyes (Strophurus taenicauda taenicauda)

Golden tailed geckos are relatively easy to care for. They live in a semi-arid environment and would shelter from extreme heat in shrubs or behind pieces of bark during the hottest parts of the day. They will appreciate a light misting once per day as they will often drink water droplets off cage furnishings rather than out of a water bowl. They are insectivorous by nature, but we have also found that they will occasionally eat a very small amount of fruit, honey or artificial gecko diet.

They prefer to have thin twigs to rest on and may often sleep on the glass sides to their enclosure, they are a bold species and will be on display or actively basking virtually all the time. They are most active at night but ours will often hunt during the day as well when we introduce livefood into their enclosure.

Many small species of gecko are skittish and not suitable for handling, but Golden Tailed Geckos are remarkably calm for a small species and will tolerate handling on an infrequent basis without showing any agitation. They may not be suitable for all first time gecko keepers simply because their small size makes them a little more delicate than some of the larger geckos. For an adult keeper or more mature adolescent this shouldn’t be an issue so could still be a sensible choice as a first pet gecko for some. Regardless they will always have a cult following among intermediate and advanced gecko keepers purely due to their beauty and their rarity within the hobby.
