Collared Lizards are an attractive and active, diurnal lizard species native to the central southern USA and Mexico. They live in open scrub, rocky desert and grassland, in some of the hottest parts of the USA, temperatures in the wild would regularly rocket past 40C during the day in their natural habitat. In the wild they are insectivorous but would also regularly consume other lizards. They have a disproportionately large head and strong jaws for a lizard of their size which enables them to overpower and crush smaller prey. They have long powerful back legs and when at optimum temperature they can run so fast that they take to bipedal locomotion (they run standing up just using their back legs).

They require a relatively large amount of space for a lizard of their size as they are incredibly active and require high basking temperatures (45 to 50 C) but also need to be able to cool down to 25C, a steep temperature gradient like this is only possible in a relatively large enclosure (4 foot minimum). A nighttime temperature drop down to 18-22C is also recommended. They reach an adult size of approximately 30cm (including tail) after around 1 year of age and are particularly attractive lizards as adults. They are sexually dimorphic when adult in terms of colouration with males being much brighter than females. Males have a blueish body whereas females are much browner.  Collared Lizards are an active and entertaining species with easy care requirements making them equally suitable for both enthusiasts and first time reptile keepers.

These Wichita mountain individuals are highly prized as being the most colourful locality of Eastern Collared Lizard with males exhibiting incredibly vibrant blues all over the body with a orange head that goes lemon yellow when in breeding season.
