The Centralian Knob tailed gecko is the largest of the knob tailed geckos which are a group of small species native to arid regions in Australia. There are 11 different species of knob tailed gecko that all share the same small ‘ball or knobble’ on the tip of their tail. The purpose of this isn’t clearly understood although it may act as a lure or distraction as they will often wiggle it rapidly when hunting. Knob tailed geckos are split into two types the “Rough” (6 Species) and “Smooth” (5 species + 3 subspecies). You tend to find that the smooth knob tailed geckos prefer to spend their time in humid burrows or termite mounds while the rough Knob tails are a little more strictly arid in their microhabitat preferences. They have large heads and well defined jaw muscles giving them a powerful bite for a gecko of their size. They are crepuscular by nature and would venture out at dusk to hunt for small insects and in the case of the Centralian knob tailed geckos they would also regularly consume smaller geckos such as Diplodactylus and Heteronotia species.

Like many of the Australian gecko species they have always been rare and expensive in the hobby but thanks to continued efforts by specialist gecko breeders they now occasionally available but the demand for them will always outstrip the supply. Centralian Knob Tailed Geckos are known for being one of the most sought after and desirable of all gecko species among specialist gecko enthusiasts, they are the “holy grail” of geckos to many keepers.

Centralian Knob Tailed Geckos are easy to care for and quite laid back, but if startled they will adopt a puffed up posture and repeatedly perform a press up motion with their whole body while making a growling chirp type noise.
