The Central American Banded Gecko (Coleonyx mitratus) is a moderately small terrestrial (ground dwelling) gecko growing up to a maximum of 20cm. They are native to Central America from Guatemala to Costa Rica where they spend most of the day hiding down burrows, or under rocks and logs, venturing out at dusk to hunt for small insects. They are hardy and live in a varied span of environments ranging from semi-arid deserts to areas of humid forests. This adaptability to varied environments makes them ideal as a first pet gecko as they have a wide range of acceptable care parameters.

They are relatively easy to care for in captivity and we find that they thrive in a bioactive / live planted enclosure. They can be a little skittish when young but clam down quickly with regular handling as they mature so that by the time they are adult they are normally very tame individuals.

These are an ideal alternative to the ever popular leopard gecko and may be more appropriate for those that may struggle to accommodate the size of the larger leopard gecko. If you want to see them why not check out our video on them on our Tik Tok Channel
