The cane toad (Rhinella marina), also known as the Marine Toad or the Giant Neotropical Toad, is a large, terrestrial true toad native to central and south America. It has also been been introduced (both intentionally and unintentionally) to various islands throughout Oceania and the Caribbean, as well as Northern Australia. It’s introduction to Australia is a famous example of why introduced species often do more harm than good (and why people should meddle with the environment), they were originally introduced there to eat the cane beetle (A crop pest) but as well as eating cane beetles they also readily eat all of the native species. They are classed as an invasive pest species in Australia and cause considerable environmental damage there through their introduction. It is the world's largest toad.

As a large active Toad, these animals require quite a large enclosure when they are adults. They need to be sprayed regularly and given a deep soil substrate to burrow. They have a large appetite and will eat almost any insects and worms.

People may often think of amphibians as being devoid of intelligence or character but that’s not the case with these. Over time they will readily recognise their keeper and appear to “beg” for food and will readily feed from your hands.
