Baron’s Racers (Philodryas baroni) are a stunning species of semi arboreal snake native to South America (Argentina, Bolivia & Paraguay). They inhabit forests and savannah where they are opportunistic hunters feeding on small rodents, birds, lizards and amphibians. Their striking appearance being vibrant green along with their rostral protrusion (long nose) coupled with being diurnal makes them well suited as a display species in a planted naturalistic terrarium. They grow to 5-6 feet in length (150-180cm) and although docile in temperament and disinclined to bite they are not suitable for beginners or younger keepers due to their potential for envenomation. They are an opisthoglyphous species meaning they possess well developed rear fangs (approximately level with the eye) along with a mild venom that can be chewed into bite wounds so a bite coupled with a chewing motion can lead to envenomation in keepers which can have a mild to moderate effect on some people causing pain and localised swelling.
