Baird's rat snakes are a medium sized north American rat snake species that are native to Southern Texas and the Northern Mexico. They are in the same family as Corn Snakes and are equally as hardy and easy to care for. This makes them an excellent alternative as a first snake. They occur over a wide variety of habitats from open plains to rocky escarpments, they are also sometimes found in farmland and around agricultural buildings where they would hunt small rodents. In the wild young are also known to feed on small lizards. As hatchlings they are grey/brown in colour with darker blotches which disappear by the time they reach adulthood. The interstitial skin between their scales is often an orange or coppery colour so adults often take on a beautiful metallic appearance. Some adults are virtually a patternless metallic copper colour while other specimens develop more of a red/orange burnished appearance and have four darker stripes which run the length of the entire body. They tend to be good feeders, posing no issues for first time keepers and Bairds Rat Snakes are notorious for being the most placid of all the various rat snake species.
