Amazon Milk Frogs (Trachycephalus resinifictrix) are a large (up to 4inches) arboreal tree frog species originally discovered in the area around the Maracana River in Brazil, but populations are widespread throughout the Amazon region. They get the name “Milk Frog” from the sticky white secretions that they can produce from their skin if they feel threatened. It is very rare that they would do this in captivity. They are a great alternative to Whites Tree Frogs as a first pet amphibian.

They are normally associated with living in trees above slow-moving streams and rivers. They are a hardy tree frog species but due to being relatively active at night they require a sizeable enclosure. As with all amphibians they will benefit from being kept in a live planted “Bio Active” environment to help maintain the humidity.

They can be found at quite a wide variety of temperatures in the wild varying from 21-30C, their wide temperature tolerance is another factor that makes them suitable for beginner amphibian keepers. We would suggest an optimum temperature of mid to high 20’s being the most appropriate temperature for them.

They will benefit from a large water bowl in their environment as especially at night they will fully submerge themselves in the water (their water bowl will need cleaning daily and refilling with fresh dechlorinated water). They will also particularly appreciate cork tubes and hollows in their environment as in the wild they would often shelter during the day behind loose bark or inside tree hollows, they have also been reported to breed in these tree hollows in the wild. We have found that with correct humidity cycling this species is easy to breed in captivity even spawning in their water bowl.

They are not a particularly vocal species but when they do croak its best described as sounding like a goose honk and due to their size it can be quite loud compared to other amphibians.
