Fat Tailed Geckos (Hemitheconyx caudicinctus) are a terrestrial gecko species native to West Africa, specifically Ghana, Benin and Togo. They live in tropical woodland where they have often been associated with living nearby to water sources and living in burrows along stream banks. They are crepuscular by nature (most active at dawn and dusk). They would venture out late evenings from their burrows, or from under logs and rocks (where they spend the day to avoid the heat) and remain active through the night hunting for small insect prey.

They are very closely related to the popular and well known leopard gecko and share a lot of similarities such as the lack of adhesive toe pads on their feet, moveable eyelids, and a thick tail for storing fat reserves to see them through the times of year when there is less food availability.

They are a very good choice for a beginner gecko species and have similar care requirements to a leopard gecko except their requirement for high humidity, this does mean that they are suitable for a tropical style bioactive/ live planted enclosure which can be a fantastic way of keeping them. They are placid and docile by nature and when adult they are often like a very chilled out, lazy leopard gecko. The young can be a little skittish and dart away while making a squeaking noise but they grow out of this behaviour at around 4 months of age and become very chilled out from this point onwards.

Fat Tailed geckos have now been selectively bred in a wide variety of colour morphs, each more beautiful than the next.

Like virtually all the animal we sell, these were bred right here in store, so you get all the benefits of buying direct from the breeder as well as from a renowned 5 Star licensed pet shop. What more could you want…
