African Bullfrogs (also known as a 'Pixie' frog due to their Latin name – Pyxicephalus adspursus) are a very large terrestrial species of frog with males sometimes exceeding 1.5kg in weight. Native to a large region of the southern half of the African continent they are normally found in savannah and scrubland areas which remain dry for part of the year and then flood at other times. This species can survive dry conditions by burrowing into mud and secreting a protective mucous layer that hardens like a paper cocoon to protect them from water loss during the dry season. This is also the species often seen on wildlife documentaries, where the male digs a channel to move tadpoles from one pool to another. Males are larger than females when adult.

They are voracious predators that when small will eat all manner of insects but the adults will appreciate occasional rodents too. They are easy to care for and robust, it is worth remembering though that these frogs will need a large terrestrial enclosure when adult.
