The Rough Knob Tailed Gecko
(Nephrurus cinctus) is a small species of terrestrial gecko native to arid
regions in Australia. Previously classified as a subspecies of Nephrurus
wheeleri they are now classed as their own species. There are several different
species of knob tailed that all share the same small ‘ball or knobble’ on the
tip of their tail for which the purpose isn’t clearly understood although it
may act as a lure or distraction as they will often wiggle it rapidly when
hunting. They are purely insectivorous by nature and will thrive on a diet of
small crickets, dubia cockroaches and locusts.
Like many of the
Australian gecko species they have always been rare and expensive but thanks to
continued efforts by specialist gecko breeders they are growing in popularity. Rough
Knob Tailed Geckos are now one of the most readily available species in the
genus. They are a small, charming species that is full of character and able to
vocalise both a ‘chirp’ and a ‘growl’ if startled but are not known for being
aggressive and can be handled.
They make great pets and
are certainly a less unusual choice for those that are looking for something
more unusual but just as easy to keep as the more popular species like leopard
geckos and Fat tailed geckos. Like virtually all the animals we sell, these were bred here in store.
