Red Tailed Racers (Gonyosoma oxycephalum) are a colourful arboreal colubrid from southeast Asia. Females can reach as much as 8 feet (2.4m) in length, males tend to be smaller around 6ft (1.8m). They spend most of their time moving through branches high up in trees or resting in tree hollows. Their diet in the wild mostly consists of birds, bird eggs, bats and lizards which they will catch up in the trees. In captivity they readily take rodents and are rarely troublesome to feed.

They are a stunning species that is generally lime green with a red stripe along the tail although there are a few naturally occurring colour forms from isolated localities that differ. Their diurnal and inquisitive nature means they are often an active and engaging enclosure occupant that will thrive in a large bioactive vivarium with plenty of live plants.

They have a reputation for being a bit feisty although this generally refers to wild individuals and captive bred youngsters are often considerably more amenable to human interaction.  They have a strong following from snake enthusiasts but there is nothing to stop them being appropriate for a dedicated beginner too as they are in general a very hardy species.
