Day geckos can be found in East Africa and some south pacific islands but the vast majority are native to Madagascar. They range in size from less than 10cm to over 30cm; one extinct species (Phelsuma gigas) from Rodriguez Island near Mauritius was one of the largest gecko species ever known. Day geckos are unique in behaviour as like the name suggests they are diurnal (active during the day) unlike most geckos which are most active during the night (nocturnal) or at dawn and dusk (crepuscular). 

The Mauritius Lowland Forest Day Gecko (Phelsuma guimbeaui) is one of the most striking of all day geckos with blue, white and red markings overlaying their lime green background colouration. Like all day geckos they are a display species that is not well suited to being handled but they are certainly interesting vivarium occupants, nonetheless. Day geckos can if handled roughly shed their tail in a process called caudal autotomy but they can also slough the top layer of their scales if they are restrained meaning handling this species is really not recommended. This species of day gecko is also one of the most sought after and rare species in the hobby with only a handful of breeders across Europe being fortunate enough to work with them. These were bred right here in store.

Like all day geckos they are relatively easy to look after and only require moderate temperatures with a basking site over a perching area. They will thrive in bioactive enclosures, and we would always suggest some form of live planted environment for these. In the wild they can often be found living on large palms where they will hide between the rough textured trunks and leaf fronds. In captivity a selection of different diameter bamboo tubed works well for all day geckos as they will hide in the end of the tubes if they feel threatened and also use them as egg deposition sites when breeding.

They eat a mixed diet of small insects, fruit, nectar from flowers and in captivity they will relish artificial gecko diets like those made for crested geckos. They will also enjoy honey as a treat and can often be tempted to take this directly from a spoon or fingertip with patience.
