Kimberley Rock Monitors (Varanus glauerti) are native to the Northwestern corner of Australia. This semi arboreal desert monitor is found on large sandstone rock outcrops and cliffs which are natural home for this species. They will also often climb what available trees there are to use them as a vantage point to survey their surroundings. Their elongate shape and long semi prehensile tail makes them appear a lighter build than many terrestrial monitors, with a lighter build comes increased agility for this somewhat acrobatic species. They are diurnal and will hunt for all manner of insects and small vertebrates that they will actively chase down but have also been known to use their slightly flattened snout to dig in loose soils for food. Although some literature state they can grow to 90cm (including tail) a more realistic size is around 75cm total length when adult but around 2/3rd of this is tail.

Although often skittish when young or moved into a new environment they are very food motivated so can be easily tamed by keepers with a little perseverance. They require blisteringly hot temperatures at the basking site (up to 50C) and high light and UVB levels. They require and ambient temperature of around 75% to facilitate shedding and with smaller or younger individuals a large humid cave will be regularly used.

In captivity, primarily they feed on insects such as crickets, locusts and dubia cockroaches but occasional rodents can be fed as a treat. They can be gluttonous with food so do be mindful not to overfeed them as they can become obese in captivity. With a little extra dedication, they are a great choice as an alternative to bearded dragons or blue tongue skinks for a novice keeper but due to their personality they are equally popular with intermediate and advanced keepers.

With a little effort this species will tame down easily and they will tolerate regular handling or being let out of their enclosure to roam around and investigate within the home.
