Honduran Milk Snakes make great pets and are a beautiful alternative beginner species, the standard colouration of alternating bands gives them a very striking look. The coloured bands are an attempt to mimic the venomous Coral Snakes that occur in the same habitat in the wild. However, the order of the coloured bands differs between the two groups of animals. This is an example of Batesian mimicry, where a harmless species mimics a dangerous one to deter predators by pretending to be the dangerous species. As its name suggests the Honduran Milk Snake is native to Honduras, but also Nicaragua and Northern parts of Costa Rica. 

Milk snakes are highly variable relatives to the king snakes. All milk snakes originate from Central and Northern America where they can be found in a variety of habitats from woodland and forests to grassland and more arid rocky environments. In captivity they are a great alternative to a corn snake as a beginner species and due to their adaptability and hardiness they will tolerate a wide variety of environmental parameters. A little skittish when young they are prone to musk rather than bite when threatened and chill out as they age.

The Milk Snake family were previously all classified as different subspecies of Lampropeltis triangulum, however they have now been reclassified into their own separate individual species.

Honduran milk snakes are one of the largest of all milk snake species regularly reaching 4-5ft in length. Due to their popularity as pets they have now been selectively bred in a wide variety of colour combinations including albino, tangerine, hypo melanistic, anerytheristic and a vanishing pattern form where the bands fade out to near patternless when they are adult.
