Grey Banded Kingsnakes (Lampropeltis alterna) are a small kingsnake species native to the arid mountainous regions around the Chihuahuan Desert area of southern USA and Northern Mexico.

Although common in the wild they are rarely encountered as they are generally nocturnal in their activity patterns and live in areas away from human habitation. Their overall colouration is a grey background with orange banding and black accents, but the specifics of the pattern and thickness of the banding can vary considerably by individual and in different parts of their natural range. They have a slightly more pronounced head than many of the other kingsnakes which also makes them readily identifiable.

They are one of the smaller kingsnake species that normally only grow to a maximum length of 90-110cm (3-3.5ft) and have a calm disposition. Unlike their larger cousins such as the Californian kingsnake or the Mexican black kingsnake (both renowned for being keen to bite) Grey Banded Kingsnakes are normally very docile and rarely display any defensive or aggressive behaviour.

Despite their docile nature Grey Banded Kingsnakes don’t normally have any issues with their feeding and once established are a very good beginner species of snake.
