The Eastern casquehead iguana, Laemanctus longipes, inhabits tropical rainforests from southern Mexico to Honduras in Central America. It spends most of its time clinging to thin branches, climbing down to the ground only in pursuit of prey or to bury eggs.

This lizard reaches a total maximum length of 50cm, but three-quarters of the length is tail. The body is laterally flattened and the head is triangular. The legs and toes are extremely long and thin and well adapted to the arboreal lifestyle of the species. They need a large arboreal enclosure with relatively high humidity and light levels and good basking spot of 30 to 35C. Despite being an iguanid they are completely insectivorous. They make an excellent display species and are also remarkably tame, often jumping out their enclosure onto their keeper in order to investigate the world outside their enclosure. Rather unusually this species is parthenogenic meaning the entire population is female and able to lay eggs and reproduce without the need for a male. Because there are no males there doesn’t tend to be any form of territorial aggression and this species will often live well together in small groups.
