Arizona Mountain kingsnakes (Lampropeltis pyromelana pyromelana) as the name would suggest are native to Arizona in the southern USA. Found in a variety of habitats they are often associated with woodland environments at elevations between 1000-2500m.

The alternating black, wite and red coloured bands is an example of aposematic colouration whereby the bright eye catching colours are there to signify danger as a warning to would be predators (the same as the yellow and black bands of a wasp for example). Despite being completely harmless, their gorgeous colouration is actually an example of Bayesian mimicry where they are imitating the venomous coral snakes that also occur in their natural habitat and rightly so have this aposematic colouration to signify their potent venom.

Arizona mountain kingsnakes are a small species of snake that only  grows to a maximum size of a meter but most individuals are a little shorter at around 90cm. They are an excellent choice of first pet snake due to their docile nature and ease of care. The small size also makes them popular for keepers with limited space available. They feed readily on defrosted mice and although they can be a little tricky to get started feeding when they first hatch, they are normally a reliable feeder once established. These are still relatively uncommon within the hobby and will appeal to both experts and novice keepers alike. We have an active breeding program for this species here at our reptile shop.
