Vriesea is a genus of the botanical family Bromeliaceae, & sub-family Tillandsioideae. It is endemic to Brazil. This species typically has wide light green leaves that are finely lineated and curving inward toward their tips. With a very full shape and open rosette, this plant can grow quite large. The name is pronounced V-REE-se-a, which is named after a botanist from Amsterdam; Willem Hendrik de Vriese.
This particular plant is the ‘Vriesea Red Chestnut Mini’. Vriesea 'Red Chestnut' is a classic favourite with striking foliage patterns growing to a full and showy rosette. The new foliage is glossy with soft green to creamy white patterns. As the leaves age they take on a darker rust shade.
The genus of Vriesea ranges from mini/small species up to very large. Vriesea leaves are always spineless and many of them show an interesting patterning. Their flowers are unique and show a wide colour palette.
Vriesea are a part of the genus of epiphytes (plants that are supported by another plant and have aerial roots exposed to the humid atmosphere). They require watering little and often, into the rosette (centre of the plant). They thrive best in humid environments planted in filtered light or part shade.
Vriesea's are 'tank' type Bromeliads as are Neoregelia's, Billbergias and others. This means they hold water in the central rosette. This enable the plants to get nutrients from the water and any fauna that is in that tank. In the wild many insects and invertebrate have evolved to live in or use these Bromeliad tanks.
