Whites Tree Frogs (Litoria / Ranoidea caerulea) also sometimes called the “dumpy tree frog” or “Australian green tree frog” originate from Australia and Papua New Guinea, with most captive frogs originating from the latter locality. Whites tree frogs are one of the best beginner amphibian species and certainly one of the hardiest of all tree frogs. They are also one of the very few amphibians that can be considered appropriate to handle on occasion.

Their hardiness is in part is due to their above average size (4in / 11cm) but also because they can tolerate some minor fluctuations in their care parameters which is something not many tree frogs will cope with.

In the wild they are found in a wide variety of habitats including coastal areas, lush forest, inland waterways and even swamps and marshes.  They are often one of the species that will take up residence in disturbed habitat such as in and around people’s homes.

They are generalist feeders eating a wide variety of insects and smaller vertebrates. Attention must be paid to their diet in captivity as they can be prone to obesity due to their large appetite. Large fat ridges above their eyes (and around the parotoid gland along the back of the head) should be avoided as although it may give them the comical appearance of eyebrows this is a sure sign of obesity.

Natural secretions in their skin make Whites tree frogs (and some of their close relatives) resistant to most amphibian fungal infections, including chytrid fungus which is responsible for the worlds rapidly declining amphibian population crisis. Perhaps another reason for their hardiness when compared to other tree frog species in captivity.

These large frogs are a fantastic starter amphibian and most active at night so a substantial sized enclosure is a must for them. They will prefer a live planted or bioactive style enclosure with a large water bowl which they are sure to make use of at night. Do ensure that the plants you use are strong enough to cope with being clambered and jumped on by such a heavy bodied species. Although less active in the daytime they will normally wake up for food irrespective of time of day but even when sleeping they are almost always out on display and have a larger than life personality.
