Royal Pythons originate from West Africa specifically the countries of Ghana, Benin and Togo where they are found in scrub and dry forest areas. In the wild they often seek refuge in unused rodent burrows where they will sit and wait in ambush for prey to appear. Despite being mostly terrestrial by nature, when they are found in forested areas, they have been known to climb trees in search of nesting birds. They are well known for their placid temperament and are one of the most popular pet snakes globally. In the USA this species is referred to as a “Ball Python” as rather than bite they tend to curl up into a ball and hide their head if they feel threatened. They can have a reputation as picky feeders but once established they are normally very good feeders throughout most of the year. It is common however, for them to fast over winter, potentially going several months without food. This is perfectly normal behaviour and is representative of their natural feeding pattern in the wild where at certain times of year there would be very limited food available, so the snakes simply cease hunting and prefer to rest instead. One of the most desirable attributes of royal pythons as well as their small size and good temperament is the astounding array of colours and pattern morphs available. Through selective breeding and combining different morphs there are now well over 1000 different colour/pattern combinations available so surely there is something to suit all tastes. Our royal pythons are bred in store, and we are happy to show you the parents so that you can see the size that the adults will attain.
