Peacock Day Geckos (Phelsuma
quadriocellata) are one of the smaller diurnal (daytime active) species of
gecko native to Eastern Madagascar. They are found from coastal forest regions
up to moderate elevation rainforest and can regularly be found in close
proximity to human habitation especially around rural buildings and farmland.
One of the most frequent places that they can be found is living amongst the
fronds of Pandanus palm trees (often alongside the pandanus frog (Guibemantis
pulcher). Peacock day geckos are generally regarded as a “species complex”
rather than an individual species as there are a number of very similar species
that are all grouped together at this point and further scientific study is
required in order to discern exact differences between different superficially
similar species. Peacock day geckos get their name from the two spots on either
flank just behind their front legs which look similar to the eyespots on a
peacocks tail. As a general observation we find peacock days geckos to be one
of the boldest of the small day gecko species and our adults will feed from our
fingers or tongs when offered.
Day Geckos are active, alert and
brightly coloured making them excellent occupants for display vivaria. In the
wild they inhabit humid lowland rainforest. They feed on small insects, fruit,
sugary tree sap and nectar from flowers. Smaller day geckos can even act as
pollinators for some species of flower. They will thrive in live planted /
Bioactive enclosures and will feed on a mixed diet of insects and artificial
gecko diet like those that are made for crested geckos. As a treat they can
also have honey or mashed fruit.
They are not suitable for
handling due to their fast speed and the delicate nature of their skin. While
all geckos can drop their tail if startled (the term for this is caudal
autotomy), day geckos are also able to voluntarily shed off the top layers of scales
and skin so that if grabbed by a predator they can wriggle free leaving the
predator with just a mouthful of scales while the gecko escapes. With a little
gentle coaxing and perseverance many day geckos will get tame enough within
their enclosure to be hand fed on insects and honey. Most day geckos are best
kept singly or in pairs, peacock day geckos can normally also be housed in
small groups so long as only 1 male is present within the group.
Like virtually all the
animals we sell, these Peacock Day Geckos were bred right here in store.
