Nosy Be Panther chameleons come
from Nosy Be Island which is the largest island off of the northwest coast of
Madagascar, just off of the Ankify Peninsula approximately 4 km from the
smaller Island of Nosy Komba and 12Km from Nosy Faly. Individuals from Nosy Be
are famous for being blue, you will often see them referred to as being called
“true blue Nosy Be” it is worth noting though that from our experiences in the
wild on Nosy Be only about ¼ of males were actually the vivid blue that is
synonymous with this locality, many others were more greenish or a few even had
some yellow hues to them. Nosy Be Panther chameleons always have yellow lips
and a patch of green or yellow surrounding the eye and on the cheeks. They
often have some red speckling that is distributed over the body, sometimes as
faint barring but this is much less than on Nosy Faly Individuals. We have been
working with a incredible line of Blue Nosy Be from a European bloodline for a
number of years and we recently outcrossed it to improve genetic diversity
while maintaining the bold colours. We find Nosy Be panther chameleons to be a
slightly slower growing locality than many of the others and we charge a little
bit more for these to reflect the additional cost and time we have to put into
rearing them to a saleable size.

Panther chameleons are one of the
largest and arguably the most colourful of all chameleons. They are native to
Madagascar and occur over most of the island. The males are considerably more
colourful and grow much larger than the females. The colour scheme of each
individual is determined by whereabouts in Madagascar they come from (referred
to as their locality). Panther chameleons were previously thought of as being
difficult to look after. This is no longer the case as advancements in both our
knowledge on their care as well as improvements in the products available mean
that although considerable dedication is still required they are no longer
classed as an advanced keeper’s species.
