The Madagascan Tree Boa (Sanzinia madagascariensis) is an arboreal species native to Madagascar where it inhabits forested areas from the coast right up to high elevation rainforest. There are two species of Sanzinia now recognised , this one is a S.m.madagascariensis, the more colourful of the two species. As they mature they undergo ontogenic colour change and much of the bright yellows will change to a deep green. Madagascan tree boas are primarily nocturnal and will spend the day hiding in tree hollows or under rocks and logs, venturing out at dusk to hunt for mouse lemurs and fat tailed lemurs which make up most of the wild diet of adults. They can often also be found after heavy rains when they will come out of their hiding spots to bask and warm up. They can potentially grow to a substantial size with most adult females reaching around 6ft (180cm) in length but males are often a little smaller. Despite their size they have a docile temperament (if you check out this video on our facebook page from when we have caught them in the wild in Madagascar you will see that even wild individuals are calm). They are stunning animals to keep and if you visit us in store you can see our adult breeding pair on display at the back of the shop. This species is always in high demand and never hang around long. This individual is not one that we bred but we are expecting a litter of our own babies later on this season so this individual wuld be great to pair up with one of ours in the future for an unrelated pair. As these are a protected species, yes it does come with its legally required accompanying A10 certificate.
