Thermostats are an essential piece of kit for controlling the heat output of reptile heating equipment. There are various different forms of thermostat to control everything from heat mats and ceramic bulbs right through to dimming thermostats to control light emitting heat sources. Selecting the correct thermostat for your heat source is vital to get the most benefit from it. In general terms mini-stats are a resistor based thermostat ideal for controlling heat mats and non-light emitting heat sources such as ceramic bulbs. Pulse proportional thermostats are a microprocessor based thermostat (more accurate than resistor based models) again designed for use with heat mats and non-light emitting heat sources. Dimming thermostats are microprocessor based thermostats designed primarily to be used with light emitting heat sources such as basking bulbs and infra-red bulbs but will work fine with any heat source. The Microclimate Evo and Evo Lite represent computer controlled thermostats that are capable of being programmed to run any heat source and have added functionality of being able to vary the heat at different times.
