The Dyeing Poison dart frog (Dendrobates
tinctorius) are native to the Northeastern region of South America. Their
name Dyeing Poison dart frog is from the derivative of their scientific name
“tinctorius” meaning “used in dyeing”. This relates back to the legends of
indigenous tribes in the local area that were said to use the toxins from the
wild frogs to Dye the feathers of Green Parrots into different colours for
decorative purposes.
Like all Dart frogs, the toxins
that they have in the wild are accumulated from their diet so captive bred
individuals do not contain the same toxins and are therefore harmless. They are
still however a hands off pet that is not for touching but this is more due to
the delicate nature of these frogs rather than any toxins.
Poison dart frogs make superb
occupants for live planted “Naturalistic” and “bioactive” enclosures as you can
create a little slice of rainforest for these to hop around in and due to their
small size they wont destroy the environment crashing around all over it like
some larger amphibian species would.
Keeping dart frogs can be thought
of as being like keeping tropical fish, it takes a considerable amount of time
and resources to craft the ideal living environment for them but once the
environment is in place they are one of the easiest and lowest maintenance
reptiles or amphibians possible to keep. With all the automated systems such as
automatic misting systems and the automated lighting such as the arcadia
LumenIZE range they can be simple in terms of ongoing maintenance.
Dyeing poison dart frogs come in
a wide variety of different variations in terms of colour and pattern, these
are “localities” and relate to how individual populations of Dyeing poison dart
frog are slightly different in appearance from one another naturally in the
wild. Examples may be as simple as “Brazil” or “French Guyana” of may be more
specific such as “Oyapok” or “Tumacumaque”, each of these will look slightly
different. There is some argument out there as well regarding whether the Blue
dart frog (generally referred to as Dendrobates azures) is actually
just another form of Dyeing Poison Dart Frog that is just all blue in
colouration.
Dyeing Poison dart frogs are one
of the easiest species of dart frog to keep and are large and bold meaning they
are perfect for someone that is a novice amphibian keeper.
