Flying Geckos (Ptychozoon kuhli) are native to Indo-China through the Malaysian peninsular into Indonesia. They occur in tropical woodland living on the trunks and in amongst the foliage where they hunt for small insects. The name flying gecko is a bit of an exaggeration as unfortunately they don’t really fly, it is more of a glide or a controlled descent. All along their flanks and tail they have modified skin flaps that help to control their descent like a parachute when they jump from trees to escape predators.
In captivity they are a hardy pet and tolerate a wide variety of temperatures and humidity but the optimum conditions would match their rainforest home. They can be handled but it is not recommended too often as they can be fast and have delicate skin fringes that can be damaged by rough handling.
This species is still imported from the wild in large numbers which can be difficult to acclimatise and are often carrying a heavy parasite load. The ones we have here are captive bred so have none of these issues.
