Corn snakes (Pantherophis gutattus) are native to the South-eastern United States from New Jersey to the Florida Keys where they are found in habitats ranging from fields and farmland to woodlands. They get their name due to their regular presence in farmland and around grain stores where they would be hunting mice and rats that eat the grain. They are predominantly terrestrial when young, but the adults will often venture into trees and take hatchling birds from nests.

Corn snakes are probably the most popular pet snake globally and have been kept as pets in the UK since at least the 1950’s. They can be a little skittish as babies but they tame down very quickly and are generally docile in behaviour meaning the corn snake has become a popular species in the reptile hobby with beginner keepers. The ability to produce a wide range of colour variations (morphs) through selective breeding also lends great appeal to this species and there are many avid enthusiasts that specialise in producing corn snakes in a dazzling array of colours. Their ease of care, good feeding response and suitability for handling makes them a great choice for first time snake owners.
