Spur thigh tortoises are one of the three species referred to as 'common garden species'. In years gone by they were imported by the thousands into the UK pet market. Due to this they are now a protected species in the wild and all individuals must have an accompanying 'article 10' certificate to prove that they were bred in captivity. The captive bred individuals for sale today do very well in captivity but can certainly not be kept outside all year round.
