Indian Star tortoises are one of the most attractive and highly sought after of all tortoise species. Native to India and Sri Lanka they are found in arid scrubland areas through to forest margins. They do not hibernate and require relatively high temperatures all year round. They can be allowed outside during warm weather but like all tortoises they can dig and climb so are best confined to an area of the garden rather than given free roam. They should not be allowed to come into direct contact with other species of tortoise as they are particularly susceptible to pathogens carried by other species and individuals that are seemingly healthy.
Their care is similar to that of a juvenile leopard tortoise as they too have a requirement for high fibre vegetation and higher than average levels of dietary supplementation.
