The Areca Palm (Chamaedorea elegans) is a popular terrarium plant that is very similar to the Parlour Palm. It is quite easy to care for and tolerates a wide array of habitats but does require regular watering. Unfortunately this species is very susceptible to being eaten, and is a favourite with locusts so often does not last as long in the vivarium of species that feed regularly on locusts. Originally native to Madagascar, it is a great option for Day Geckos and Chameleons. Due to its hardiness this makes an excellent vivarium plant as it is able to tolerate a wide variety of temperatures, humidity and light levels. A great option for arboreal species as this plant has the potential to grow to 12m in height! However this is of course unlikely in a vivarium.
