Decor
Decorating your reptile’s habitat is important. Not just from an
aesthetic viewpoint but also for the comfort of your pet, reptiles need places
to hide to feel secure, they need things to climb on an over to maintain muscle
tone, they need water bowls to drink from but most importantly they need
environmental enrichment to maintain their psychological wellbeing. Many snakes
and smaller lizards exhibit a behaviour called thigmotaxis which means a
tendency to stay close to the walls of an enclosure, pressed up against
furnishings or a pressed against the inside of a hide. Thigmotaxis is an
antipredator behaviour and providing multiple hiding places helps animals to
feel secure and content. The minimum requirements for any reptile enclosure
should be at least two areas to hide and a water bowl but when it comes to décor in your enclosure it really is a case of the more the merrier.
