Infra Red bulbs are one of the most widespread and effective ways of heating reptile enclosures by providing red light heat source that will warm one area of the enclosure. For many years people thought that reptiles could not see the red end of the light spectrum and whilst we now know that this isn't the case, many people still opt to use infrared bulbs as a 24hour or nighttime heat source due to the fact that reptiles do not appear to be disturbed by this type of light. When installing an infra red heat bulb make sure that the bulb fitting is rated to an appropriate wattage for the bulb you intend to use. Infra red bulbs can and will get very hot so in the interests of safety we strongly recommend the use of a guard or cage to protect both your reptile and yourself from coming into contact with the bulb directly where burns could occur. As with all heat sources the use of an appropriate thermostat is essential to control the heat output of the bulb both to avoid the risk of overheating and reduce any fire risk associated with heating elements.
